Four Canadian wireless carriers to connect text messaging networks

Canada’s four wireless communications providers announced Nov. 6, 2001, that Bell Mobility, Microcell Connexions, Rogers AT&T Wireless and TELUS Mobility will enable inter-carrier, mobile text messaging across Canada.

SMS-based messaging allows mobile wireless customers to send and receive short text messages on their wireless phones.

Many wireless phones sold in Canada have the feature, but the service is limited as a wireless user can only communicate to people on the same network as they are.

The connection technology will allow wireless users to send and receive text messages to and from users of different networks by simply addressing the message to the recipient’s phone number.

The connected services are expected to be operationla by spirng of 2002.
